Since our original Kearney choice (Coney Island Cafe) was closed, we turned to handy Yelp! to find an alternative. Since Tommy's had an average of 4 stars, we headed over. After being subjected to indifferent service and indifferent cooking, I wouldn't eat here again. The only thing that stopped me from giving it one star was that a few items were pretty tasty. My husband ordered a cheeseburger and onion chips. He thought the burger was adequate, on par with, say, Dairy Queen. However, it cost nearly twice as much. Whatever for? The onion chips, being a frozen product, were just fine. My son ordered a grilled ham and cheese with fries and said both were good. Honestly, though, food spends so little time in contact with his taste buds now that adolescence has begun, he might not be the best judge. I did sample one of his fries and it was good - although obviously a frozen product once again. I had a turkey sandwich on wheat with potato salad. There was a huge quantity of turkey stacked between good wheat bread. I'd said no mayo, and they sent it on the side. Newsflash: Miracle Whip and mayo aren't the same thing. At least it was on the side. I was glad the sandwich was so big because I ended up sharing half of it with my daughters (more on that in a minute). The potato salad, by contrast was inedible. I could detect only three ingredients: potatoes, hard-boiled eggs and mayo (not Miracle Whip). I sprinkled on some salt and pepper but still couldn't eat it. And then after I gave up half my sandwich, I went back to the potato salad, added a shot of mustard and more pepper and managed to eat more, but it was pretty awful. Now for the kids meals. The menu says "10 and under." The portion size says "5 and under". Be forewarned. After eating their small (frozen) fish portions and half-order of (frozen) fries, my 9-yr-old and 7-yr-old were still quite hungry, and they aren't huge eaters (my 9-yr-old is underweight for her height). Any kid who is school age needs more than 2 oz. of fish and a 1/2 cup of fries, and at $3.95 each, these meals were horribly overpriced. So, I divided the remaining half of my sandwich between the two girls for them to eat open-faced. That about equaled what they had been given originally, and it was enough to satisfy them. Meanwhile, we were treated to a lazy, inefficient waitress who got our drink order wrong, overcharged us (claiming the menu was old), and took forever to get us our check. While we were waiting, we noticed the table tent promoting a pie-and-coffee special, which read, "Proudly serving Sara Lee pies." More frozen food! Not much to be proud of, I'd say, especially when people can buy the same items at the grocery store for a lot less than what they pay at Tommy's. Maybe the breakfast is good at Tommy's, but I'm not going to bother to find out. After all, Coney Island Cafe opens at 8 - I can wait that long to get a good hot dog.

It's better than mc Donald's at 1 in the morning but I wouldn't go here if anything else was open I ordered a side salad once and the waitress brings out a small sauce bowl with shredded lettuce and drenched in ranch I didn't even eat it gave it to my brother but the chicken fried steak is ok it's not really steak it's more like deep fried ground beef but it's not that bad and the pancakes are really good the service is fast and the waitresses are nice

Great food and great atmosphere. Just a nice place to go when you don't have a home cooked meal. Food is pretty good considering the price and the waiters are always friendly :) Pie is really tasty and if you are in the mood for something crazy try the monkey desert :)

Tommy's is a classic midwest diner. While the food isn't exciting, its typical hearty dependable fare. The locals like it, very busy. I had steak and eggs and everything was A-Ok, teh steak hasd a great flavor but was a bit chewy and the server was a bit distant and distracted. Perhaps the best thing is that they are open 24-hours, great for the weary traveler.

Thursday morning 4 AM. I really needed some good diner coffee, and yes, some Biscuits and Gravy ($4.25). Both excellent. In a booth were some dudes who looked like Ice Road truckers on vacation, and there was a table filled with PYT's really not yet into high school. Such is late night in GI. Fucking excellent breakfasts, and the last time I came in and spoke the manager I said "I had people who wanted to go to Perkins, I said no, we're going to Tommy's." He was very appreciative. This place never closes, and it's just a gem in this town.

This family restaurant is a safe bet on where to get a good meal with large portions in Grand Island. There are other options in Grand Island but it was early afternoon on a Sunday and most places had closed for lunch already. The servers were not super friendly, they seemed friendlier to the locals. This is one of those places where you feel out of place when you;re not from Grand Island. The food is good though and the portions very large. The Apple pie was the one thing that stood out to me. It was delicious. They have several other types of pies too.

Stopped for breakfast on a cross country trip. It might feel like a Denny's at first, but the people who work there know the people that eat there. I saw a waitress bring something to a guy who just came in, without him ordering anything. I'll go back any time I'm in Grand Island.

Cute little diner. Perfect break from a cross country trip packed with fast food stops. I had the chicken legs dinner and it was so good! Service was friendly. Will definitely be going again on the way back. :D

The food was okay, but not as good as expected, and they charge way to much for a cup of coffee with breakfast. I understand they don't want people to sit and drink coffee all day, but when I order breakfast or food it would be nice to be charged less than a buck for w crappy cup of joe. Maybe lunch or dinner are better, but the breakfast was definitely nothing special.

Love this restaurant! Anything you could want is on this menu from breakfast to the steak I ordered. I eat here all the time. Love the eggs in mornings. Their signatures are broaster chicken, Reuben and chicken fried steak.

We're on s road trip to Oregon, and we just got finished eating on Easter Sunday. It was really good in old fashioned sort of way. I had the Sunday special., all you can eat broasted chicken with a salad and 2 sides. It was all yummy! Everyone else had good stuff too, from the chili, club sandwich and broasted chicken sandwich and Mac and cheese.

It looked like a cheaper place to get a meal and had good reviews on here so I went. Given I didn't expect much.....but the backed potato could fit into the palm of my hand, "chicken fried steak" was kinda like the kind you would get in grade school? It's the kind that comes in a package and then they deep fry it here lol large amount of effort on their part I'm sure ;) Soup of the day kind of looked like baby food? smelt ehh....I ended up leaving with half of my food remaining....something a Texan rarely does!!!!! Trust me....don't waste your time.

From the time you walk thru the entrance door until walking back out exceptional service & friendliness! We had breakfast both times and was great! Omelets are big, english muffin thick and yummy! Bacon & toast are thick slices! GRITS..could not believe they offer them. Could the South be moving closer to Nebraska? Young gentleman, very good server (may be family member of owner) but, anywho, he was very attentive! Mike & I will be doing business here for next the 2 weeks and I am sure we will dine again at Tommy's Restaurant in Grand Island, NE! Thank you for very nice dining experience! Sheila from N.C.

Great breakfast place!!! Everything was as it should be. Eggs cooked to order, good sausage, pancakes. I'd give them five stars, but the coffee was only slightly better than "church" coffee.
